The "Cut'n'Mix" application facilitates a process of deconstruction, reformulation and juxtapositioning of different textual, auditory or visual elements. Some may identify the concept as something called "mashup". On this site, Cut'n'Mix refers mainly to a software application which has been available online for download since the mid 1990's: It is a unique word processing application which helps creative writers generate new ideas through the use of different methods of text randomization and manipulation. Cut'n'Mix expands the palette of tools available to writers with functions not available in standard word processors.

Core features of the application provide the abilities to:
Quickly rearrange the positions of words in text using a simulated paper-and-scissors cut-up interface called the "Cut-up Laboratory". (Also commonly referred to as "Fridge Magnet Poetry")
Generate pools of random words from Cut'n'Mix's embedded English dictionary database to inspire a more creative use of language (we explore a theory of why it is that in the "hands" of Shakespeare, English words become so plastic and malleable)
